Concrete Pillar and Foundation Removal for Steel Mill Retrofit

CMC Steel Mill specializes in bar products such as rebar, angle, and t-posts formed by heating a 5 1/4” x 7 5/8” x 30’ rectangular steel billets. The mill was installing a state-of-the-art Danieli billet welder, a technology which improves efficiency by eliminating the gaps between billets in an endless rolling system. Sun Construction SC was contracted for the retrofit and welder installation project.

Challenge

The flume system, which transported mill scale in water, had to be demolished to make way for a new flume compatible with the continuous billet system. Bluegrass was contracted by Sun to remove the concrete pillars and foundations holding the flume.

Bluegrass mobilized two 330 brokk robotic hammers operated by skilled and experienced technicians, and demolished 150 yards from underneath a live temporary flume suspended above the existing flume, where hot steel continued passing as the demolition proceeded. Through meticulous planning and execution, this phase of the retrofit project was successfully completed on schedule while meeting all safety standards, and with minimal disturbance to mill operations.
