Lock and Dam Modifications and Demolition

Diamond Wire Sawing Specialists for Dams, Spillways, and River Lock Projects

Working on dams and river lock structures means operating on active infrastructure where water management, fish migration windows, navigational schedules, and strict environmental regulations govern every phase of the project. The structures are massive, the tolerances are tight, and the scheduling windows are usually limited by seasonal and operational constraints.

Bluegrass Bit has supported dam demolition, dam expansion, stress relief slot cuts, dam face and spillway modification, fish bypass construction, bridge column shafts, turbine removals, seismic upgrades, and river lock wall repair projects since 1979. Our patented diamond wire rail saws and underwater cutting systems are designed for exactly these conditions; delivering precise, low-vibration cuts on heavy civil concrete structures in environments where conventional demolition methods are not feasible.

Why Choose Bluegrass Bit for Your Dam Demolition Project

Choosing Bluegrass Bit for dam or river lock modification, repair or removal project means partnering with a concrete cutting contractor that brings decades of proven performance on some of the most technically demanding water infrastructure projects in the country. Our reputation for safety, schedule adherence, and engineered solutions is backed by a consistent safety record and the specialized certifications these projects require.

Services we provide for lock and dam projects include:

  • Diamond wire sawing and rail saw cutting for large-scale concrete removal
  • Underwater diamond wire sawing for submerged structures
  • Core drilling for rigging and block removal
  • Custom slurry containment systems for environmental compliance
  • Precision concrete cutting for fish bypass structures and spillway modifications
  • Scheduling around critical navigational windows and seasonal environmental restrictions
  • Seismic remediation and structural access cutting

Our Approach to Dam and River Lock Projects

Large-scale hydraulic projects—including river dam removal, seismic upgrades, and spillway modifications—require the same meticulous planning as any high-stakes heavy civil operation. These projects often involve the added complexity of managing water flow, protecting local ecosystems, and maintaining the structural integrity of adjacent facilities. River dam and lock repairs or modifications frequently require underwater concrete and metal cutting executed under challenging conditions.
The Bluegrass Bit approach is the consistent application of our engineering-led strategies. We don’t just provide equipment; we provide a comprehensive plan to segment and remove concrete with surgical precision. Our experience with projects like the Hiwassee Dam Slot Cut and Gross Reservoir Dam Expansion exemplifies our ability to deliver success on technically demanding sites where traditional demolition methods are not feasible.
Gross Reservoir Dam Expansion: Bluegrass was tasked with removing the dam’s ogee crest, measuring 160’L x 28’W x 13’H. Working from platforms attached to the dam face on a narrow crest, we core drilled 4″ wire access holes through the dam’s 28′ width, used those holes to place our patented rail saw frames, and cut over 20,000 SF of concrete with no safety incidents. The cutting pattern was designed to allow multiple saws to run simultaneously thereby meeting a condensed schedule.

Hiwassee Dam Slot Cut: Bluegrass technicians made two precisely located vertical cuts in the 307’ high dam, engineered to proactively release compression stress thereby allowing manageable movement in the structure. We completed the job on schedule with a perfect safety record and no damage to the environment.

Whether the project involves lock removal, precision spillway modification, lock wall repair, or fish bypass installation, our team executes with solutions, speed, and safety.

Specialized Equipment and Technology for Dam and Lock Projects

The defining capability Bluegrass brings to dam and river lock projects is our diamond wire saw expertise, including our patented diamond wire rail saws which are custom-designed and fabricated in our own machine shop. Bluegrass Bit is the only concrete cutting contractor in the industry using this technology. The rail saw system is robust, reliable, efficient to deploy, and purpose-built for large concrete structures where scope, geometry, or site access demand a non-standard approach.
Our rail saws were designed for the particular demands of lock and dam modification and demolition projects: large block removal from confined platforms, simultaneous cutting runs to meet compressed schedules, and reliable performance in wet, challenging conditions. The four-wheel-drive continuous loop design maintains consistent wire tension, reducing wire breaks and cut time. Our core drilling capability covers up to 42″ diameter holes at any angle and to depths of 50′, and provides rigging access points needed to lift and remove large concrete segments.
For underwater work — submerged lock walls, or sills — we deploy our purpose-built underwater diamond wire saws, operated from the surface and designed for diver or ROV-assisted deployment.
Our custom slurry containment systems are deployed and operated by experienced technicians on every job, ensuring environmental compliance throughout the cutting process.

Dam and River Lock Removal FAQs

What Are the Primary Benefits of Using Diamond Wire Saws on Dam and Lock Projects?

Diamond wire sawing produces low vibration and minimal noise compared to blasting or hydraulic hammering — both critical factors when working near active operations, sensitive aquatic environments, or where the structural integrity of adjacent facilities is a consideration. Our saws can cut through any concrete configuration, including heavily reinforced dam faces and lock walls, above and below waterline. Combined with our slurry containment systems, the process captures effluents and protects water quality throughout the project.
River lock and dam projects are scheduled to align work windows with navigational outages, low-traffic periods, water levels, and seasonal environmental restrictions such as fish migration. Bluegrass specializes in critical path operations. Our purpose-built equipment mobilizes and sets up quickly, and our experienced operators maintain schedule under pressure. We have the equipment and personnel to run multiple saws simultaneously when necessary.
Bluegrass supports a broad range of water infrastructure projects, including full dam demolition and removal, dam expansion and crest modification, dam spillway and face repairs and modification, fish bypass construction, seismic remediation, penstock tower access, river lock wall removal and replacement, and water intake modifications. If the project involves cutting or removing large concrete or metal structures in or around water infrastructure, Bluegrass has the equipment, technology and experience to execute it.
